Rothco: Brand History, Clothing and Tactical Gear Guide

Rothco is a clothing and equipment brand with roots in the Army-Navy surplus trade. Its modern range includes military-inspired apparel, bags, accessories and footwear. This guide explains the company's history and the differences to check across those product families. To browse the retailer selection, shop Rothco clothing and gear at Army Navy USA.

Rothco history: the company and the brand name

Rothco's account of its history connects a family surplus business with the development of its clothing and gear range. The company's starting date, the use of the Rothco name and the age of an individual product are separate questions.

1953: Milton Somberg joins the family business

According to Rothco's official company history, Milton Somberg joined Morris Rothenberg & Son in 1953 after an invitation from his father-in-law. The business operated from a loft on Great Jones Street in Manhattan, dealing in used clothing, rags and Second World War surplus.

From surplus goods to manufactured clothing and equipment

The company says that scarcer supplies of used military goods prompted a move into manufacturing. Its range subsequently extended into tactical, work and outdoor markets. That transition matters when shopping today: military styling does not establish that an item is used surplus or government-issued equipment.

The 1970s: another generation and a shorter name

Rothco's company account places Howard Somberg's arrival in the early 1970s. Its company-hosted book, A Family Business: The Story of Rothco, second edition, printed page 102, separately records a naming milestone in 1974. Rothco became a shortened promotional name for Morris Rothenberg & Son, and both names appeared together in that year's catalogue. The book's catalogue-history page also identifies 1974 as the first catalogue appearance of the Rothco name.

More products and more warehouse space

The same book describes an increasing mix of newly manufactured clothing, camping goods and outdoor supplies. Its account of the 1977 warehouse search, printed page 104, explains the decision to look beyond New York City for additional space. The current company history later dates the development of its Ronkonkoma, New York headquarters to 2001 and describes Rothco as a family-owned business.

These sources explain the business's development. They do not establish the manufacture date, country of origin or procurement status of a current jacket, cap or accessory.

Understanding the Rothco product range

The manufacturer's wider range and the items a retailer carries are different things. The broader military clothing and gear category provides an all-brand shopping route. The families below help organize your search; they are not a promise that Army Navy USA stocks every model, color or size.

Shirts, pants and layers

Rothco's official clothing directory groups pants, shirts, layering systems and underwear, and training clothing. It also identifies uniform and military-style categories. Choose the garment type first, then compare cut, fabric, fastening and sizing on the exact listing. A T-shirt, a uniform shirt and a base layer need different fit information.

Headwear

Caps and hats can use adjustable, measured or style-specific sizing. Check the listed adjustment and size options rather than applying a clothing size to headwear. Pattern names and military-inspired styling identify appearance; they do not by themselves show that an item meets an organization's uniform requirements. Use the Headwear filter on the ANU vendor page for the current selection.

M-65 field jackets and other outerwear

Rothco's M-65 Field Jacket listing describes a removable liner, collar-stowed hood and four exterior cargo pockets. Those are details of that listing, not a specification for every M-65-style jacket. Compare the selected model's shell, liner, closures and measurements. Check whether the retailer supplies the liner with that exact item.

Bags and carrying equipment

Compare bags by what you need to carry: dimensions, opening, closure, compartments, carrying method and included accessories. A familiar bag name does not establish device protection or compatibility with another item. Review the current listing's measurements and construction before choosing. For a broader comparison, use the store's bags and packs category.

Pouches and MOLLE accessories

Attachment arrangements and included parts can make similar-looking accessories quite different. For example, Rothco's MOLLE Knife Sheath listing describes rear mounting straps and a pocket for a sharpening stone, while explicitly excluding the stone. Confirm dimensions, mounting and package contents on the item you intend to order.

Footwear and named lines

Forced Entry is a named Rothco footwear line; its 6-inch composite-toe model is one example. A range name does not establish the same toe construction, fit or protective rating across every model. Compare the exact boot and any documentation needed for your workplace before making a selection.

How to choose without confusing brand and product details

  1. Choose the task. Start with a garment, hat, jacket, bag, accessory or boot.
  2. Check the exact listing. Compare measurements, materials, fit, closures and included components.
  3. Select the option. Size and color options can have different availability.
  4. Keep claims specific. A component description or feature on one model does not apply to the whole range.

The ANU Rothco vendor page brings together items listed under that vendor label. Individual products may identify another named maker or product brand. Use those listing details when matching a model or accessory; the vendor filter is a shopping route, not proof that every item has the same manufacturer.

For uniform or workplace purchases, compare the exact written requirement with the model's documentation. Military-inspired appearance, a familiar pattern or the word "tactical" is not a substitute for that check.
